Hosoi is now an ordained pastor at the Sanctuary in Huntington Beach, CA. While in prison, Hosoi became a born-again Christian. He only served 4 years of his 10-year sentence. Hosoi was arrested in 2000 after trying to transport crystal meth. He even declined an invitation to the first X Games. Hosoi stopped attending events after a warrant was out for his arrest in 1995. In the ’90s Hosoi faced bankruptcy due to a series of failed skateboard companies, as well as an addiction to drugs. Hosoi formed Hosoi Skates in 1984, one of his few business ventures that didn’t end badly. Hosoi also invented the Christ Air and Rocket Air tricks. He won both the vert and street contests at the 1989 Lotte Cup in Japan. Hosoi quickly emerged as a competitor in vertical riding, and in street skating too when it began in the ’80s. Hosoi eventually turned pro at 14 with Sims Skateboards. He left a year later after they refused to turn him pro, joining Dogtown, only for them to bankrupt not long after. Around age 13 he got his first sponsorship from Powell Peralta. Hosoi had a string of bad luck with sponsors early on. His dad managed a skatepark in California, leading to Hosoi dropping out of school to hone his skills. Just have them over there to the side.’ Pretty soon, they knew we were there just to skateboard, not to cause trouble.Also known as “Christ” or “Holmes”, Christian Hosoi started his path to pro skateboarder at 7.

We did that so much they went, ‘They’re just going to keep bringing ramps. Just as Hosoi reclaimed the joy and glory of his youth, the documentary shows the determination necessary to create the “most beautiful skate park on the beach in my hometown.” Hosoi still remembers how difficult it was to go skating in Venice growing up: “We’d take ramps and they’d kick us out. I wouldn’t change it for all the money in the world.” He feels there’s no certainty he would have stopped using if he had that payday: “I might not even be alive if I had that cash.” Most importantly, he believes “my life, my story, my rights, my wrongs” can offer hope to other people who feel lost: “Your mess-ups become your message, your tests become your testimony.”

Hosoi says no: “You know, my story’s my story. Even so, don’t you ever wonder: If I’d found my faith a few years earlier, would I have Tony Hawk bank today? (The skater and X Games announcer Dave Duncan told Sports Illustrated in 2004 that he felt “every dollar that Tony Hawk has made is really Christian’s money.”)
